Howard Becker is a self-proclaimed “sports nut”, and has been a die-hard Chicago Bears fan for as long as he can remember. He feels fortunate to have watched some of the greatest players to ever play the game, such as Gayle Sayers, Dick Butkus and Walter Payton.
Probably his greatest thrill in sports was seeing the 1985 Bears win the Super Bowl. “I went to one of the playoff games that year. Chicago winters are pretty brutal, and it was definitely cold that day, but when you’re out there watching your team, it doesn’t matter. That year, everyone in Chicago was a Bears fan. If you weren’t a fan before this, you were now. Even I was amazed at how a football team could bring a city together”, says Howard.
To this day, during the professional football season, his Sundays are reserved watching his beloved Bears. When he’s not watching football, he’s usually talking football with friends. “I pretty much eat, breathe and sleep football during the season.” He never misses a score or statistic. “I’m just your average fan”, says Howard.
His passion for the game and willingness to share the knowledge he has gained over the years led him to write this guide. “I’m convinced there are two kinds of people: those that are already football fans and those that want to be football fans. And the only reason they aren’t fans yet is because nobody has explained the game to them”. So, he did his part and wrote this guide.
