1. Chapter 1 - The A, B, C’s of Pro Football    Take a Peek! Download Chapter 1 for FREE!

Remember the game “keep away” that you used to play as a kid?  Think of football in those terms. Throughout a game, the opposing teams trade possession of the ball numerous times.  In football, you want to be the one with the ball, because if you don’t have the ball, you can’t score!

  2. Chapter 2 - The Field of Battle

The action takes place between the goal lines, the white lines that run from sideline to sideline and are located one hundred yards apart from one another at either end of the field.  The goal line is the front part of the end zone. A team attempts to advance the ball into its opponent’s end zone to score a touchdown.

  3. Chapter 3 - What’s the Score?

While there is no “typical” score in an NFL game, for frame of reference, when a team scores in the thirties or higher, it is putting up pretty good numbers.

A score of 38 - 31, for example, is considered high scoring, whereas a 14 - 10 game is a low scoring game, or “defensive battle."

  4. Chapter 4 - Play It Again

Each attempt by the Offense to advance the ball down the field is called a play.  Shortly after one play ends another starts, and so on….going on continuously throughout the game.  In a given game, a team might run 50, 60 or 70 plays…or more.

  5. Chapter 5 - Let’s Get Down

When an Offense starts a drive, it is given a series, or set of four plays called downs. The first play in the series is 1st down; the second play is 2nd down, etc.

If the Offense able to advance the ball forward at least ten yards in the series, it is awarded another 1st down, and it starts a new series of four downs.  If it advances the ball far enough in the next series it gets another 1st down and new series, etc.

  6. Chapter 6 - What Makes the Offense so Offensive?

Each time it takes the field, an Offense’s objective is to advance the ball down the field and score a touchdown; or, at the very least, move the ball into field goal range (to at least its opponent’s 32 to 33 yard-line).  While it’s all well and good to move the ball down the field, it’s another to score.

  7. Chapter 7 - Defense!!...Defense!!...Defense!!

This is a statement that I think many (if not most) sports experts would agree with.  I don’t care if we’re talking about football, baseball, basketball or soccer.  Without a strong Defense, you aren’t going to win.

  8. Chapter 8 - What’s So Special About Special Teams?

Although Special Teams Units are not on the field as much as the Offensive and Defensive Units, they play an extremely critical role in a team’s success (or failure).  Special Teams Units are made up of players from both Offense and Defense, and are generally players that are not starters.

  9. Chapter 9 - That’s Against the Rules!

The Officials maintain order, enforce the rules and call penalties.  Any one of the seven Officials may call a penalty and each carries a yellow penalty flag (which is really a weighted down hanky) that he tosses into the air when he sees a penalty.  Any time you see a flag thrown, or if you see or hear the word “FLAG” when watching a game on TV, you will know that a penalty was called.

  10. Chapter 10 - Lions and “Tigers” and Bears

If you think that you can figure out which team is better than which just based on names, you’re wrong!  For example, everyone knows that a Lion can beat up a Colt, but in the NFL world, it’s a whole different story.  Or, what about a Bengal vs. a Bear?  Who’s gonna win that one?
